For the fifth year, Chef Mynhardt Joubert will again set the stage for a sweet soirée with his iconic Free State fruitcakes. All for a very special cause and just in time for the festive season.
Butterfly House, our community resource centre, was built in Fairyland in 2008 (through the generous donation by Ivar Koteng and Paarl Round Table). Fairyland is a previous informal settlement, 10km outside of Paarl. The founding vision of Butterfly House was to address and expand the holistic care practices provided by Drakenstein Palliative Hospice (DPH).
Over 300 children registered from 2-18 are enrolled and participate in the Butterfly House programmes.
Chef Mynhardt, who heavily draws on the memories of his mother and grandmother’s kitchens in the Eastern Free State when cooking, unsurprisingly attributes his winning recipe for his annual fruitcake to this beautiful part of the country too: “Three years ago, my sister baked me the most delicious fruitcake – packaged in an old-fashioned cake tin – and mailed it to me all the way from Bethlehem, Free State. I never thought much of fruitcake before then, but that special shipment changed this, and to this day, I still bake her recipe every year.”
Says Chef Mynhardt: “Our secret to a fruitcake with a difference? We bake with love, constantly keeping in mind the deserving people who will benefit from each and every cake sale. It’s an absolute highlight and the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year passed. A recipe only becomes something truly special when you pour your heart and soul into it.”
